Depression Treatment

Depression is one of the most treatable mental health conditions, and recovery is possible with the right care. At Unity Behavioral Health, treatment is individualized to each person’s unique needs, symptoms, and goals. Our team works collaboratively with each client to develop a personalized treatment plan that promotes healing, resilience, and long-term wellness.

Treatment often begins with individual therapy, where clients work with a licensed mental health professional to better understand the factors contributing to depression while learning practical skills to improve mood, build healthy coping strategies, and strengthen emotional well-being.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the most effective, evidence-based treatments for depression. CBT helps individuals recognize negative thought patterns, challenge unhelpful beliefs, and develop healthier ways of thinking and responding to life’s challenges. Depending on a person’s needs, other therapeutic approaches, including Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), may also be incorporated to improve emotion regulation, increase mindfulness, and strengthen interpersonal relationships.

For some individuals, medication management may also be recommended. Antidepressant medications can help improve mood, restore energy, reduce feelings of hopelessness, and make it easier to engage in therapy and everyday life. A psychiatric provider will complete a comprehensive evaluation, discuss treatment options, and determine whether medication may be beneficial based on each individual’s symptoms, medical history, and personal preferences. If medication is prescribed, your provider will monitor your progress and make adjustments as needed to ensure safe and effective care.

Some individuals benefit from therapy alone, while others achieve the best results through a combination of therapy and medication. Additional services, such as Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), family therapy, case management, and lifestyle interventions, may also be recommended depending on the level of support needed.

Understanding Depression

Depression is more than simply feeling sad or having a difficult day. It is a common but serious mental health condition that can affect the way a person thinks, feels, and functions in everyday life. Depression can impact relationships, work or school performance, physical health, and overall quality of life. While symptoms vary from person to person, depression often causes a persistent feeling of sadness, emptiness, or a loss of interest in activities that were once enjoyable.

Depression can develop gradually or appear after a significant life event, such as the loss of a loved one, trauma, chronic stress, or major life changes. For some individuals, there may not be a clear cause. Regardless of how it begins, depression is a medical condition—not a personal weakness—and effective treatment is available.

Early recognition and treatment can make a significant difference. With evidence-based therapy, medication when appropriate, and a strong support system, many individuals experience meaningful recovery and improved quality of life.

When Depression Becomes More Serious

In some cases, depression may include thoughts that life is not worth living, feelings of hopelessness, or thoughts of self-harm or suicide. These symptoms should always be taken seriously and require immediate professional support.

If you or someone you know is experiencing these thoughts, seek immediate assistance by calling 911, going to the nearest emergency department, or contacting the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988.

Comprehensive Care at Unity Behavioral

Treatment looks different for everyone, which is why we take a personalized approach to care. Following a comprehensive assessment, our clinical team works with each individual to develop a treatment plan tailored to their unique needs, goals, and circumstances. Depending on your symptoms and level of support needed, your treatment plan may include one or more of the following services:

Individual Therapy

Meet one-on-one with a licensed therapist in a safe, confidential environment to address concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, stress, life transitions, and other mental health challenges. Individual therapy focuses on developing healthy coping skills, improving emotional well-being, and working toward meaningful, lasting change.

Couples & Family Therapy

Mental health affects not only the individual but also the people closest to them. Couples and family therapy can help improve communication, strengthen relationships, resolve conflict, and create healthier patterns of interaction. These sessions provide a supportive space for loved ones to work together toward healing and understanding.

Medication Management

For some individuals, medication may be an important part of treatment. Our psychiatric providers conduct comprehensive evaluations to determine whether medication may be beneficial and work closely with clients to monitor effectiveness, manage side effects, and make adjustments as needed. Medication management is often combined with therapy to provide a well-rounded approach to treatment.

Case Management

Mental health recovery often involves addressing practical challenges that can affect overall well-being. Our case management services help clients connect with community resources, coordinate care, navigate insurance and healthcare systems, and access services such as housing assistance, transportation, financial resources, employment support, and other community-based programs. By reducing barriers to care, case management helps clients remain engaged in treatment and supports long-term recovery.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

For individuals who need a higher level of support than traditional outpatient therapy, our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) offers structured, evidence-based treatment while allowing clients to continue living at home and maintaining many of their daily responsibilities. Through a combination of group therapy, individual support, medication management, and skill-building, IOP provides a comprehensive approach to mental health treatment.

At Unity Behavioral Health, we understand that healing is not one-size-fits-all. Our team collaborates with each client to create an individualized treatment plan that evolves with their progress, ensuring they receive the right level of care at every stage of their journey toward improved mental health and wellness.
